“Women Supporting Women In Nollywood Is A Scam” – Bukunmi Oluwasina Sparks Industry Debate

According to Ireporter Online, popular Nigerian actress and filmmaker Bukunmi Oluwasina has criticized the notion of “women supporting women” within the country’s movie industry, describing it as largely superficial and insincere.

In a recent interview with BBC Pidgin, the award-winning actress and mother of one expressed doubt about the genuineness of female solidarity in Nollywood, arguing that such support is often short-lived and lacks authenticity.

Oluwasina remarked that while the slogan has gained popularity, its practical application among women in the entertainment industry remains questionable. She said, “The idea of women supporting women in Nollywood is a scam. It doesn’t last, and even when it happens, we all know how it goes. Everyone knows that a woman’s greatest critic is often another woman.”

She emphasized that this behavior is not exclusive to Nollywood but reflects a broader societal issue where women are less inclined to genuinely uplift one another. “Even outside the film industry, when you see women supporting women, most times it’s not real. It looks good on social media, but in real life, it’s rarely genuine,” she added.

Oluwasina also lamented that women in Nollywood tend to extend more financial and emotional support to men than to their female colleagues. “If you listen to many women, they’ll tell you they can lend a man money to start a business, but when it comes to helping another woman, they hesitate. I don’t know why it’s like that,” she said.

The actress further pointed out that hardworking and independent women in the industry often struggle against harmful stereotypes that attribute their success to wealthy sponsors rather than their talent or effort.

She noted, “There are women in this industry who have no sponsors and still excel through sheer hard work. We see their results and their impact. But unfortunately, others hide under that success to advance their own agenda, making it look like every successful woman depends on someone.”

Her remarks have sparked widespread discussion online, reigniting debates about the authenticity of female unity and the challenges women face within Nollywood’s competitive landscape.
