The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, February 11, in Kaptagat, Kenya, a renowned training ground for long-distance runners.

Reports indicate that the vehicle, carrying Kiptum, Hakizimana, and passenger Sharon Chepkemoi, 32, veered off the road and crashed, resulting in fatal consequences for Kiptum and Hakizimana. Chepkemoi survived the crash and is receiving medical treatment.

Kenneth Kimaiyo, a first responder, described the harrowing scene, recounting Kiptum’s lifeless body found beneath the vehicle and Hakizimana’s critical condition, which deteriorated rapidly.

The vehicle reportedly lost control and careened off the Eldama Ravine-Eldoret road, crashing into a tree, causing extensive damage. The bodies were transported to the hospital for autopsy following standard procedures.

Jackson Tuwei, President of Athletics Kenya, confirmed the tragedy, expressing condolences and initiating formalities for the autopsies.

The accident, occurring late in the evening, has sent shockwaves through the athletics community, prompting tributes and reflections on Kiptum’s remarkable career and the loss of two promising talents.
