Adewole Ebenezer Adebayo rose to national prominence following his 2023 presidential run under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In this interview, the lawyer-turned-businessman-turned-politician shares his deep concerns over the current state of the nation, which he attributes to what he describes as misguided policies by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Adebayo also addresses the wave of defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), offering his perspective on the political undercurrents shaping Nigeria’s democracy.

On his goal of planting 100 million trees in his lifetime:
“You begin by taking deliberate action,” Adebayo says. “Today is May 12, it’s just 10 a.m., and we’ve already planted 100 trees.”
He likens the task to everyday human functions: “Think about how many steps you take in your life, how often you blink or breathe—those are continuous biological actions. Similarly, our daily activities, even when we eat or discard things like sachet water, contribute to pollution.”
For Adebayo, the solution is consistency: “Hundred million may sound overwhelming, but with daily efforts—some days more, some days less—the numbers will add up. It’s all about commitment and action.”

On the buzz around 2027 elections, opposition defections, and the claim that Tinubu’s leadership is the attraction:
Adebayo questions the very definition of “opposition” in Nigeria.
“Where is the real opposition?” he asks. “Most of those switching parties are establishment politicians moving within the same political family. A PDP member defecting to APC isn’t a shift in ideology—it’s simply moving from one room to another within the same house.”
He argues that true opposition comes from those who reject not just party labels, but the entire framework of exploitative politics. “Genuine opposition is rooted in a rejection of the ideology, practices, and outcomes of establishment politics. These people can’t simply jump parties because they stand for different values.”

Speaking on his own party, the SDP, he says, “We’ve seen a significant number of people gravitate toward us as well. In fact, I’d argue that more are joining the SDP than the APC.”
But he emphasizes that joining the party isn’t enough: “We always ask, has your mindset changed? Do you now share our vision? If you’ve contributed to Nigeria’s problems—through harmful policies, injustice, or misappropriation of public funds—are you willing to truly repent?”

He concludes by distancing the SDP from power-hungry politicking: “We’re not about tallying governors, senators, or ex-this and ex-that. Our mission is to rally Nigerians around a fundamental shift in political culture.”
