You’re The Only African Leader Biden Has Requested To Meet – US Envoy Tells Tinubu

President Joe Biden of the United States has extended an invitation for a discussion to President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria.

In a statement from Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Media and Publicity, it was revealed that Ambassador Molly Phee, the US Presidential Envoy & Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, conveyed this message during a visit to President Tinubu on a Saturday.

Ambassador Phee informed President Tinubu that President Biden wishes to meet him during the United Nations General Assembly in New York City later in September.

This meeting aims to further advance discussions between the two leaders.

The US envoy highlighted that President Tinubu is the sole African leader to receive such an invitation from President Biden. He emphasized the United States’ commitment to fostering significant American investment in Nigeria and pledged to collaborate closely with President Tinubu to achieve this goal, thereby strengthening both the Nigerian and regional economies.

Ambassador Phee expressed admiration for President Tinubu’s efforts to create an environment conducive to this endeavor. He conveyed that President Biden’s desire to meet was a testament to the high esteem in which President Tinubu’s leadership is held.

President Tinubu advised Ambassador Phee to ensure that US policy towards Africa remains collaborative, particularly in the face of challenges posed by anti-democratic forces both within and outside the continent. He highlighted the importance of reforming American-backed development finance and multilateral institutions to better suit the developmental needs of emerging African democracies.

The Nigerian President acknowledged that while the private sector would drive progress within a favorable environment, the US Government should innovatively promote American industrial investment in Nigeria. He pledged to address regulatory, tax, and environmental concerns to facilitate such investment and vowed to generate prosperity for all Nigerian citizens.

Regarding the crisis in Niger Republic, President Tinubu affirmed his commitment to concluding his economic reform program for the betterment of Nigerians. He asserted that he derives his approach from Nigeria’s interests rather than external influences, including those from other nations.

President Tinubu assured Ambassador Phee that he accepted the invitation to meet President Biden on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He concluded by emphasizing that the work of perfecting democracy remains ongoing, both in developed democracies like the United States and in emerging democracies around the world.
