The person who shared the video alleges it depicts Niger’s finance minister being compelled by the junta to account for the “missing money” from public funds.

The caption suggests that the army has given him 48 hours to explain or face execution by firing squad.

This video has also circulated on Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook, accumulating more than 1,300 views since July 29. However, this video is misleading and falsely linked to recent events.

On July 26, the former head of Niger’s Presidential Guard, General Abdourahamane Tiani, staged a coup and detained the democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum. Subsequently, Tiani declared himself leader on July 28, with the president and his family held in the presidential palace.

Upon investigating the video, it was determined to be from December 2021.

The original footage, posted on Facebook, showed Marou Amadou, Niger’s former justice minister, not the finance minister.

Marou Amadou had held office from April 2011 under President Mahamadou Issoufou until President Mohamed Bazoum took office in April 2021.

The misleading video does not involve the finance minister facing threats from the junta. Instead, it shows Marou Amadou, the former justice minister, expressing emotions while paying tribute to Niger’s former president in 2021.

Despite claims of fraud and embezzlement in the misleading video, there have been no allegations of corruption against Marou Amadou related to these events.
