Has Tinubu Finally Sacked Emefiele? – What You Need To Know

Tinubu and Emefiele

Yesterday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took a significant step by removing Godwin Emefiele from his position as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This action also resulted in the dismissal of all deputy governors of the apex bank.

In Emefiele’s place, Tinubu nominated Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, a former commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State, to lead the apex bank for the next five years. This decision comes after Emefiele’s suspension by Tinubu in June, followed by his subsequent detainment by the country’s state security agency.

Emefiele had been reappointed by Tinubu’s predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, for a second term of five years as CBN Governor in 2019.

According to a statement by Ajuri Ngelale, the president’s special adviser on Media and Publicity, this appointment adheres to Section 8 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007. This section grants the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria the authority to appoint the governor and four deputy governors for the CBN, subject to confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In addition to Dr. Cardoso’s nomination, Tinubu also approved the nomination of four new deputy governors of the CBN to serve for an initial term of five years. They are Mrs. Emem Usoro, Mr. Muhammad Dattijo, Mr. Philip Ikeazor, and Dr. Bala M. Bello.

As Dr. Cardoso takes office as the CBN governor, he will face pressing challenges that demand swift resolution for him to succeed in this role. These include critical issues such as exchange rates, price stability, interest rates, and economic growth, which experts consider top priorities.

It’s worth noting that President Bola Tinubu had previously suspended Godwin Emefiele as the CBN governor in June, instructing him to immediately transfer his duties to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the deputy governor of Operations Directorate, who was to serve during the investigation and subsequent reforms.
