10 Countries Where Faith Persists Despite Persecution

International Christian Concern (ICC), an American ecumenical NGO, has released its annual list of the “World’s Worst Persecutors” of Christians, shedding light on countries where Christians faced persecution, imprisonment, kidnapping, or murder in 2023.

The report highlights ten countries where Christian faith is severely oppressed:

1. Nigeria: Faced with attacks from armed groups like Boko Haram and rebels, Christians in Nigeria, particularly in the north, endure daily persecution with incidents of abduction and massacre.
2. North Korea: Under Kim Jong Un’s dictatorship, Christianity is forbidden, and Christians live their faith in hiding, facing imprisonment, torture, and execution.
3. India: Christians in India, constituting around 2.5% of the population, encounter persecution from Hindu nationalists, leading to violence, forced conversions, and false blasphemy allegations.
4. Iran: Despite the authoritarian regime, the Christian community in Iran is growing, although Christians face restrictions, and conversions from Islam are met with criminal sanctions.
5. China: The atheist Communist regime in China opposes Christianity, but the faith is making rapid progress, with Christians living clandestinely and inspiring admiration for their courage.
6. Pakistan: Christians in Pakistan face dramatic circumstances due to Islamic fundamentalism, with the anti-blasphemy law used to oppress and target believers, leading to arrests, death sentences, and executions.
7. Eritrea: Eritrea is considered the most repressive state in Africa for Christians, who face frequent arrests, particularly those associated with unrecognized churches.
8. Algeria: Christians in Algeria encounter repression of religious freedoms, with anti-blasphemy laws allowing the arrest of non-Muslims accused of proselytizing.
9. Indonesia: Christians, comprising nearly 10% of the population, experience tensions, bullying, and violence, along with restrictions on access to Christian places of worship.
10. Azerbaijan: The Armenian Christian population in Nagorno-Karabakh faced a harsh blockade and ethnic cleansing, with Azerbaijan criticized for the destruction of the region’s Christian heritage.

Despite the challenges, the report notes signs of hope, with the Christian faith progressing in some of these countries, including China, Iran, and Nigeria.
