The investigative work, conducted by journalist Umar Audu, exposed irregularities in the acquisition of a Cotonou varsity degree in six weeks and participation in the NYSC scheme. Mrs. Obilor-Duru clarified that the suspension is temporary pending an investigation involving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the concerned countries’ education ministries, the Department of State Security Services (DSSS), and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC).

She urged the public to support the ongoing efforts by providing useful information to aid the investigation and prevent future occurrences. Emphasizing the global issue of degree mills, she mentioned the ministry’s commitment to reviewing strategies, implementing global standards, and collaborating with stakeholders to enhance the Nigerian education system. Additionally, internal administrative processes are underway to determine the culpability of staff in accordance with applicable Public Service Rules.
