The Senate President expressed his concerns, emphasizing that such a move could significantly worsen the existing security challenges in the country.
Akpabio conveyed his plea during a courtesy visit by the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annette Gunther, in Abuja on Wednesday. The German envoy highlighted the potential for collaboration between the two nations, citing their positions as major economies in Africa and Europe.
While acknowledging Nigeria’s status as Germany’s second-largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa, Akpabio pointed out the pressing security issues faced by Nigeria. He urged Germany to join forces with Nigeria in addressing security and power challenges, emphasizing the importance of such collaboration for the socio-political development of Nigeria.
The Senate President specifically appealed to Gunther for assistance in fighting insecurity, considering Nigeria’s large population and the challenges posed by infiltration from neighboring countries. Akpabio recounted past difficulties in receiving support during the Boko Haram crisis, stressing the significance of international collaboration, particularly from major players like Germany.
Expressing concern over Germany’s decision to deport 12,000 illegal migrants of Nigerian origin, Akpabio highlighted the potential security implications.
He urged the German government to allow Nigerian immigration officers to assess the deportees to distinguish genuine Nigerians from others. Akpabio warned that indiscriminate deportation could lead to increased militancy and insecurity in Nigeria, especially given the complex political situations in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso
