Tragedy Strikes Kenya: Two Dead, Over 270 Injured In Devastating Gas Truck Explosion

The tragic incident occurred in the Embakasi neighborhood southeast of Nairobi, just before midnight on Thursday. The explosion, described as feeling like an earthquake by witnesses, sent a massive fireball into the night sky, causing extensive damage to vehicles, homes, and commercial properties.

Government spokesman Isaac Maigua Mwaura described the aftermath, stating that the inferno not only damaged numerous vehicles and businesses but also resulted in residential houses catching fire. Many residents were still inside their homes as the incident unfolded late at night.

As a result of the explosion, three people lost their lives, and 271 others were admitted to various hospitals in Nairobi, according to Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General of Police. The affected area, strewn with charred vehicles and damaged structures, resembled scenes of devastation.

Eyewitness James Ngoge shared his experience, stating, “We were in the house and heard a huge explosion. The whole building was shaken by a huge tremor; it felt like it was going to collapse. At first, we didn’t even know what was happening; it was like an earthquake. I have a business on the road that was completely destroyed.”

The explosion left many residents displaced, spending the night outdoors as black smoke billowed from the affected area. The Kenyan government swiftly secured the scene, cordoning off the impacted area, and initiated rescue operations.

This tragic incident follows a similar catastrophe in 2018 when a fire at Nairobi’s Gikomba market claimed 15 lives and injured at least 70. The market, known for its stalls selling second-hand clothes, shoes, and vegetables, witnessed a devastating pre-dawn blaze that destroyed numerous structures.
