Breaking News: Former President Passes Away At 98
Former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, a key figure in the nation’s transition to multi-party democracy, has reportedly died at the age of 98.
The sad news was confirmed by the current President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, who announced Mwinyi’s passing on a state television program. According to President Hassan, Mwinyi breathed his last around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Mwinyi had been undergoing treatment for lung cancer in London since November last year before returning to Tanzania for further medical care in Dar es Salaam.
In honor of his legacy, Tanzania will observe seven days of mourning, during which national flags will fly at half-mast.
Ali Hassan Mwinyi, chosen by independence leader Julius Nyerere to lead Tanzania, faced significant economic challenges upon assuming office. He embarked on vital reforms, lifting restrictions on private enterprise and simplifying import procedures, earning him the affectionate nickname “Mzee Rukhsa” or “Mr. Permission” in Swahili.
Born on May 8, 1925, in Tanganyika, Mwinyi initially pursued teaching before entering politics in the 1960s. His political career flourished after the merger of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964, leading to various ministerial roles and ultimately the presidency of Zanzibar in 1984. He later succeeded Nyerere as the President of Tanzania, leaving a lasting imprint on the nation’s political and economic landscape.
