In a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the National Assembly, these prominent figures urged caution against permitting the United States and France to transfer their military operations to Nigerian soil. Citing the perceived ineffectiveness of foreign military presence in curbing terrorism within the Sahel, they questioned the advantages of hosting such bases.
However, Onyinye Madu, the Head of Communication at the French Embassy in Nigeria, clarified the situation in an interview with The Punch. Madu asserted that there are no ongoing or planned discussions between France and Nigeria concerning the relocation or establishment of military bases. She emphasized the absence of any such agenda from France’s perspective.
Similarly, the Federal Government echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that there have been no talks with foreign entities regarding the establishment of military bases within Nigeria. Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, reiterated this stance in a statement released on Monday.
The clarification from both the French Embassy and the Nigerian government aims to address concerns and dispel rumors regarding the establishment of foreign military installations on Nigerian soil. As discussions and debates surrounding national security continue, it is essential to ensure transparency and clarity regarding the country’s defense policies and international engagements.
