Senator John Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, has encouraged Tobi Amusan, the world record holder, to overcome her Olympics challenges at the upcoming 2024 Olympics.

Amusan has been consistently successful in track and field events, winning gold medals in three successive Diamond League competitions, two gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, and two gold medals in the African Championship. Additionally, she is a three-time African Games gold medalist.

Despite her impressive record, Amusan has yet to win an Olympic medal, having participated in the last two editions of the tournament (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020). Her closest attempt was in 2020 when she finished fourth.

Amusan has already qualified to represent Nigeria at the 2024 Olympics in Paris and has been in fine form leading up to the tournament.

On Sunday, May 12, Amusan achieved the fastest time in the women’s 100m hurdles this year, winning her event at the Jamaican Athletics Invitational in Kingston in 12.40 seconds (0.9).

In response to her outstanding performance, the sports minister took to his social media page to commend Amusan. He wrote: “Take your flowers Tobi Amusan, you stormed to an emphatic win in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Jamaica Athletics Invitational, clocking a time of 12.40s (0.9), a World Lead time.

“You defeated world champion Danielle Williams, who came second in 12.46s, while Christina Clemons was third in 12.54s.

“Tobi, you keep making our country proud. Paris Olympics is around the corner, and your performance gives us hope, just like others, that Nigeria is set to break a jinx. Keep soaring; we are proud of you.”
