The summit unveiled critical crime statistics and comprehensive reform plans aimed at overhauling the state’s criminal justice system. According to data presented by Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos High Court, between 2018 and 2024, 62,117 inmates were enrolled in LCIS, with Lekki accounting for 13 percent of reported cases.
Following Lekki, Oshodi/Isolo, Apapa, and Ojo each accounted for 10 percent, while Alimosho represented nine percent, and Agege and Ikeja each accounted for eight percent. Mushin had six percent, Lagos Island five percent, and Yaba four percent. Conversely, Epe, Ajeromi, and Victoria Island ranked lowest at two percent each, with Ikoyi slightly higher at three percent.
Furthermore, the statistics revealed the state of origin of defendants, with Ogun, Oyo, and Lagos indigenes topping the list of crime suspects. Ogun State led with 17 percent of total crimes in Lagos, followed by Oyo with 13 percent and Lagos with 11 percent.
Justice Oshodi highlighted that stealing-related offenses dominated criminal court records at 44 percent, followed by breaches of peace at 15 percent, armed robbery at 10 percent, and sexual crimes at five percent.
Recommendations to address these challenges included strengthening collaboration and data sharing among criminal justice agencies, expanding the use of technology across the criminal justice system, enhancing capacity building for criminal justice professionals, promoting public awareness and engagement, institutionalizing the Bondsmen Scheme, and building additional custodial centers.
Justice Oshodi emphasized the importance of equipping justice professionals with the latest skills and knowledge to uphold justice effectively, expressing confidence in achieving holistic reforms collaboratively.
