A Powerful Advocate For Business Reform: Senator Monday Okpebholo’s Captivating Speech At NBA Benin Law Week
At the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Benin Law Week, the distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo, the APC gubernatorial candidate for Edo State, delivered a thought-provoking address on the challenges and prospects of doing business in Nigeria. His speech, given at the Edo State High Court of Justice, was a highlight of the event, underscoring his profound understanding of the intricate relationship between law, economic advancement, and national security.
Senator Okpebholo’s presentation centered on the pervasive issues hindering business operations in Nigeria, particularly in Edo State. He began by acknowledging the critical role of law in fostering economic growth and maintaining security. He then delved into the multifaceted challenges that businesses face, emphasizing three primary areas: regulatory environment, infrastructure and logistics, and access to finance and credit.
Regulatory Environment and Governance
Senator Okpebholo highlighted the cumbersome and often opaque regulatory frameworks that stifle business activities, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Despite national efforts to streamline business regulations through the Business Facilitation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act of 2023, Edo State has lagged, ranking last in the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) report. He passionately called for urgent, decisive actions to reverse this trend and pledged to mobilize all state resources to improve the business climate if elected governor.
Infrastructure and Logistics
The senator drew attention to the severe infrastructure deficits, particularly inadequate transportation networks and unreliable power supply, which inflate business costs and impede operations. He cited Okomu Oil Palm Company PLC’s struggles with electricity as a microcosm of the broader issue. Promising a transformative approach, he outlined his plan to leverage the new constitutional provision allowing states to regulate electricity, vowing to enhance energy infrastructure through private sector partnerships and sustainable initiatives.
Access to Finance and Credit
Addressing the critical issue of financing, Senator Okpebholo lamented the prohibitive barriers that prevent businesses from securing affordable loans and credit. With only 6% of SMEs having access to formal credit, he called for inclusive lending practices, alternative financing options, and streamlined tax systems to alleviate the financial burdens on businesses. His vision for Edo State includes a business-friendly environment with reduced taxation and increased support for startups and SMEs.
In conclusion, Senator Okpebholo’s impassioned speech was a clarion call for comprehensive reforms to surmount the challenges of doing business in Nigeria. His commitment to tackling regulatory bottlenecks, infrastructure deficits, and financing hurdles resonated with the audience, reinforcing his reputation as a visionary leader poised to drive economic transformation in Edo State. As the gubernatorial elections approach, his insights and pledges offer a beacon of hope for a more prosperous and business-friendly Edo State.
