Nigerians React To Edo-State House Of Assembly-Drama (Details)
A mild drama unfolded at the Edo State House of Assembly during the plenary session on Wednesday as Natasha Osawaru, the Deputy Majority Leader, was ordered to leave due to improper dressing and wearing dark shades.
Ireporteronline reports that Speaker Blessing Agbebaku directed the Egor Constituency representative to leave after a point of order was raised by Nicholas Asonsere, who represents the Ikpoba Okha Constituency.
Asonsere argued that Osawaru’s attire violated the House rules, emphasizing the need to maintain the sanctity of the legislative chamber.
“This hallowed chamber is a sacred home. We will not continue to accept or allow anybody to bring it to disrepute. We have tolerated enough of the attitude and behaviour of some honourable members, so to speak, and if we did not correct this now, it would become a precedent for others to emulate, if not now, in the near future,” Asonsere stated.
He further elaborated on the House’s rules, likening them to a guiding “Bible,” and stressed that any member violating these rules is subject to punishment.
Speaker Agbebaku supported this stance, clarifying that the enforcement of the dress code was in line with the established House regulations.
“Improper dressing and wearing of dark shades is not allowed in this House. It is not me that said it but the House rules. So, please, let us always comply with these our rules,” Agbebaku said.
Nigerians have taken to various platforms to express their views on this incident. While some support the enforcement of the dress code to uphold the dignity of the legislative process, others believe that the focus on attire distracts from more pressing legislative duties. The debate continues as citizens reflect on the balance between maintaining decorum and addressing substantive issues within the House.
