Edo State’s Political Rift: Shaibu vs. Obaseki

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, recently expressed his frustration with Governor Godwin Obaseki, claiming that the governor has failed to acknowledge his contributions. Shaibu boldly declared that he was instrumental in making Obaseki the governor, not the other way around.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Shaibu revealed that it took former governor Adams Oshiomhole three months to convince him to support Obaseki’s gubernatorial bid. He highlighted that Obaseki, at the time, lacked political experience and financial resources. According to Shaibu, Oshiomhole’s persistence eventually swayed him and his supporters to back Obaseki.

11 Cult Suspects Arrested in Edo

In another development, the Edo State Special Task Force on Anti-Cultism has made significant progress in its fight against cultism. The task force recently paraded 11 suspects who were arrested at Auchi Polytechnic in Edo North Senatorial District and Sakponba in Benin.

During a briefing in Benin, Chris Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation and a member of the task force, emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating cultism in the state. He warned that there would be no hiding place for cultists in Edo State.

UCH Resident Doctors Protest Abduction of Colleague

Resident doctors at University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, staged a peaceful protest on Friday to demand the immediate release of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, and her nephew, Abdul-Mugniy Folaranmi. Dr. Popoola, a Senior Registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted on December 27, 2023, alongside her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.

The protest highlighted the growing concern among medical professionals over the safety of their colleagues, calling for swift action from the authorities to secure their release.

Igbo Women Decry Harassment by Soldiers in South-East

Igbo women, under the umbrella of the Igbo Women Assembly (IWA), have appealed to the Federal Government to withdraw soldiers stationed at checkpoints across the South-East region. The women claim that the soldiers are causing more harm than good, accusing them of extorting money from motorists and harassing commuters.

The women expressed their frustration with the treatment they receive at these checkpoints, particularly being forced to disembark from their vehicles and cross on foot. They urged the government to take immediate action to address these issues and restore dignity to the people of the South-East.
