Afolayan explained that Netflix’s management recently informed Nigerian filmmakers that the platform would no longer fund local movie productions. Describing the decision as a significant blow, he expressed concerns over the impact it would have on the income of filmmakers who invest substantial amounts in their projects.

He shared that, fortunately, he had already completed seasons two and three of the Anikulapo series, but other filmmakers whose projects were in the pipeline saw their contracts canceled.

Despite the setback, Afolayan encouraged his fellow filmmakers to keep producing high-quality content. He emphasized that no matter the challenges, Nigerian filmmakers should continue to focus on crafting stories with universal appeal and high production standards, which will eventually be noticed by global platforms.

“I think we should continue what we do. Whether it is in English, Ibibio, or any native language, as long as the story has universal appeal and production value is high, you will get on several platforms,” Afolayan stated.

Reflecting on the situation, Afolayan admitted that the news was heartbreaking, noting that it marked a stark change from the time when Netflix’s support had guaranteed funding for Nigerian films. He recalled the promising three-film deal signed with Netflix three years ago, which allowed filmmakers to focus on creative projects with guaranteed funding.

He added, “It is a big blow for us. In my head, I have been thinking about how we go from earning dollars in films to now figuring out where we will place our films.”

Afolayan expressed his gratitude that Anikulapo was able to complete its upcoming seasons before the halt, especially as other filmmakers who signed similar deals saw their projects scrapped.
