Former Governor Aliyu: Governors Blaming Federal Government For Insecurity Are Either Liars Or Inept

Former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu has criticized governors who attribute the security challenges in their states to the Federal Government, asserting that a competent governor would not seek assistance from the center regarding insecurity…READ MORE…

Speaking at the graduation ceremony for the Executive Intelligence Management Course 17 at the National Institute for Security Studies in Abuja on Saturday, Aliyu expressed that “no capable governor should lament to the federal government whenever faced with security issues.”

He raised concerns about how governors utilize their security votes and the actions they take based on the security reports they receive.

“When I took office as governor of Niger State, I recognized the significance of the Department of State Services (DSS) and established a strong relationship with them. I reviewed their reports daily, which proved to be immensely beneficial in tackling banditry,” Aliyu remarked. “They recommended hiring a helicopter to patrol the borders of my state, and that strategy worked effectively.”

He continued, “If any governor tells you they’re not in control of security matters, they’re either deceiving you, incompetent, or lack the necessary understanding of their role. Many who complain fail to even review the reports they receive.”

Aliyu stated, as the former chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, he ensured he personally read all reports submitted to him and would follow up if he hadn’t received one in two days. “You cannot keep blaming the federal government when you have the power to take action,” he said. “What about the security votes? Where does that money go if you must turn to the federal government for assistance? Those funds are meant to help security agencies carry out their duties in your jurisdiction.”

Additionally, Aliyu addressed criticisms against the Tax Reform Bills, encouraging those opposed to thoroughly read the documents. He also emphasized the need for better communication from the government regarding policies, noting that citizens must understand that no policy will benefit everyone equally. “Many of those debating the tax bill haven’t even read it. Moreover, the government must do a better job of communicating, especially considering the literacy levels in the population. It’s essential to explain significant policies clearly, so everyone understands the changes they may bring.
