Nigerian Passport’s Global Standing Dips Dramatically – Down 32 Spots Over 20 Years
The Nigerian passport has dropped 32 places in the global passport ranking over the past two decades, according to reports from the Henley Passport Index spanning from 2006 to 2025.
According…Nigerian Passport’s Global Standing Dips Dramatically – Down 32 Spots Over 20 Years
to ireporteronline, the index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access either visa-free or with visa-on-arrival arrangements.
While the Nigerian passport gained access to 11 additional destinations during this period, it fell from 62nd place in 2006 to 94th in 2025.
The green passport now provides access to 46 destinations visa-free or through visa-on-arrival programs, an increase from 35 in 2006. However, Nigerians continue to face restrictions in over 181 destinations worldwide.
As of January 2025, travelers holding Nigerian passports can enter only 25 countries visa-free. This number rises to 46 destinations when including visa-on-arrival and e-visa options.
Countries offering Nigerian passport holders visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or e-visa access include several African nations such as Benin, Ghana, The Gambia, and Senegal, along with countries like Iran, Maldives, Fiji, and Antigua and Barbuda in other regions.
Naija News has learned that the Nigerian passport has shown slight improvement in recent years, climbing from 103rd in 2021 to 94th in 2025.
Despite this progress, its overall standing among 199 countries and 227 travel destinations studied continues to reflect limited global mobility.
The Henley Passport Index attributes changes in ranking to countries’ efforts in strengthening diplomatic relations, modernizing visa processes, and enhancing border security measures. A higher ranking reflects the success of these efforts, while declines indicate gaps in international collaboration and travel facilitation.
