The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development confirmed an outbreak of anthrax earlier this week on a farm in the state and called for immediate containment measures.

Addressing stakeholders at the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, Dr. Nafisa Maradun, Zamfara’s Commissioner for Health, outlined proactive measures to curb the spread, including widespread vaccination drives and public sensitization campaigns.

“We must enhance coverage and intensify awareness efforts across the state,” Maradun emphasized, stressing the importance of public engagement and vaccinations.Dr. Yusuf Haske, Director of Health, highlighted the necessity of involving livestock stakeholders to facilitate early detection and rapid response efforts.

“So far, the outbreak has resulted in two animal deaths, with no human cases reported,” said Dr. Usman Gusau, State Veterinary Epidemiologist. He added that partnerships with community leaders and traditional healers are being leveraged to encourage prompt reporting of suspected cases.

Commending the state’s response, World Health Organisation Coordinator for Zamfara, Dr. Mukhtar Raji, praised the “One Health” approach as critical in addressing zoonotic diseases like anthrax. “WHO remains committed to supporting the state with surveillance, case management, and community engagement,” Raji stated.The International Rescue Committee also pledged support, while Dr. Kabir Husaini, newly appointed as Incident Manager, assured stakeholders of his dedication to overseeing response efforts and implementing an incident action plan to streamline interventions.

Anthrax is a bacterial infection primarily affecting livestock but can pose risks to humans through contact with infected animals or contaminated materials
