Nigerians Brace For Costlier Calls: SERAP Issues Ultimatum Over Telecom Tariff Hike

Speaking before lawmakers to present the ministry’s budget, Tijani explained the rationale behind the decision, emphasizing that private sector-driven investment in telecom infrastructure often targets economically vibrant areas, leaving underserved regions behind.

“Rising inflation and the escalating cost of operations have necessitated the tariff increase,” Tijani stated, highlighting the balance between sustaining the industry and economic realities.

The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) have both condemned the hike, calling it burdensome and unjust. SERAP issued a 48-hour ultimatum for reversal, threatening legal action should the government fail to comply.

NATCOMS President Adeolu Ogunbanjo acknowledged the association’s openness to a modest increase of 5–10% but described the approved 50% hike as excessive. Ogunbanjo revealed plans to engage the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) this week and, if necessary, initiate legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, the NCC justified the adjustment as the first tariff review since 2013, capping the increase at 50% to mitigate the over 100% hike proposed by operators.

In its statement, the NCC acknowledged the economic pressures on consumers but emphasized the importance of balancing consumer protection with the sustainability of the telecom ecosystem.

“The commission is committed to ensuring that tariff adjustments are transparent and fair to consumers while supporting the industry’s viability,” the statement read.

The tariff hike has sparked public outrage, with subscribers expressing concerns over the rising cost of communication services, particularly its impact on low-income earners. The issue remains a contentious topic as stakeholders seek solutions to address economic challenges without overburdening the public
