Melaye’s defection to the ADC comes weeks after he formally announced his resignation from the PDP, citing the party’s lack of direction and its failure to provide credible leadership or governance solutions for Nigeria. In his resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, the former lawmaker expressed deep disappointment with the PDP’s trajectory.

In the letter, Melaye stated that the decision to quit the PDP was reached after thorough reflection on the party’s inefficacy and the ongoing political crisis plaguing the nation. He described the party as lacking the strength and capability to deliver meaningful change, adding that it had become increasingly difficult to continue associating with an organisation that, in his view, no longer served the interests of Nigerians.

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” he wrote, stressing that the prevailing leadership vacuum in the party had necessitated his exit. Melaye also made it clear that his withdrawal was total and effective immediately.
