New Era Of Security: Nigeria And Brazil Strengthen Military Cooperation

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, met with his Brazilian counterpart, Mr. José Múcio Monteiro Filho, on August 25, 2025, for a high-level bilateral discussion on the sidelines of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s official state visit to Brazil.

According to iReporter Online, the meeting focused on bolstering defence relations, enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, and advancing defence-industrial cooperation between both nations.

Also present at the strategic meeting was Gen. Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire, Chief of the Joint Staff of the Brazilian Armed Forces. During the session, Minister Badaru reaffirmed Nigeria’s strong commitment to fully implementing the Nigeria-Brazil Defence Agreement signed on June 24, 2025.

He described the pact as a crucial foundation for technology transfer, joint industrial ventures, and capacity development in Nigeria’s defence sector.

According to iReporter Online, Badaru emphasized that closer collaboration—especially in maritime domain awareness, joint military drills, and systems interoperability—would strengthen the protection of essential sea lanes and support the economic aspirations of both countries through their blue economies.

“Nigeria is determined to build a resilient defence industry that reduces reliance on imports and positions our country as the defence-industrial hub in Africa,” Badaru stated.

He praised Brazil’s role in safeguarding the Gulf of Guinea, a maritime corridor vital to Nigeria’s economy, and also commended its leadership in promoting the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone (ZOPACAS).

According to iReporter Online, the meeting concluded with a strong reaffirmation of Nigeria’s readiness to pursue a forward-looking partnership with Brazil—deepening bilateral ties while reinforcing its leadership role in regional and transatlantic security frameworks.
