Wike Sounds Alarm: ‘Two Years Can’t Undo Decades Of Neglect In Abuja!’

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged residents of Abuja to manage their expectations, stressing that revamping all sectors within a two-year timeline is simply not feasible.

According to iReporter Online, the minister made this known during his monthly media briefing in Abuja, where he addressed pressing concerns surrounding infrastructure, education, healthcare, and transportation.

Wike particularly criticised the overwhelming focus on the quantity of educational institutions rather than the quality of learning they deliver. “Every community wants a university, but no one is asking about the quality of education being provided,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of fewer, better-equipped institutions, saying, “I would prefer to have just three universities, provided they offer quality education.”

On the issue of healthcare and hospital rehabilitation, according to iReporter Online, the minister cautioned against expecting instant transformations.

He admitted that while significant reforms are underway, progress takes time and careful planning. In discussing Abuja’s chaotic transport system, he acknowledged the current challenges but assured residents that improvements have begun.

“This is just two years in office. You can’t expect a total overhaul of all sectors in such a short time. Government must be deliberate and strategic,” Wike said.

Responding to criticisms over the low visibility of mandate secretaries, Wike defended their performance and his own leadership approach. “You don’t expect me to just sit in the office. I approve funds and supervise execution,” he remarked.

According to iReporter Online, Wike also revealed plans to showcase newly completed school projects but noted these achievements might not receive the same publicity as road projects.

“We are quietly upgrading educational infrastructure,” he said, “but we don’t throw elaborate parties for school projects like we do for roads.”
