House Of Reps Sets Up Committee To Tackle Rising Drug And Alcohol Abuse
The House of Representatives has inaugurated an ad hoc committee to probe the growing menace of illicit drugs, tobacco, alcohol, and related substance abuses across Nigeria, along with their regulatory gaps and impact on the nation’s economy.
According to Ireporter Online, the committee, chaired by Hon. Oluwatimehin Adelegbe, was constituted following a House resolution aimed at curbing the rising cases of drug abuse among Nigerians. The lawmaker emphasized that the panel’s mandate includes identifying institutional and enforcement weaknesses, examining the root causes of substance abuse, and recommending practical measures to strengthen national drug control systems.
Hon. Adelegbe noted that the committee’s efforts are geared toward enhancing public health, safeguarding citizens, and developing strategies that will mitigate the devastating effects of substance misuse on the economy.
In carrying out its assignment, the committee plans to engage relevant agencies, experts, and members of the public to gather useful insights and solutions. Nigerians have been encouraged to submit memoranda containing their concerns, suggestions, and intervention ideas to support the legislative process.
