Yeni Kuti Slams Wizkid: ‘You’re Dirtying Nigeria, Not My Family

According to Ireporter Online, Yeni Kuti, daughter of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has urged calm amid the ongoing dispute between singer Wizkid and the Kuti family, warning that the feud casts Nigeria in a negative light.

Speaking on TVC’s Your View, Yeni expressed her respect and longstanding friendship with Wizkid, recalling his early performances at the Shrine during Felabration. She voiced disappointment that he did not act sooner to prevent public backlash and emphasized that taking sides in such disputes often harms innocent parties.

Yeni called on both sides to reconcile, particularly as Nigeria prepares to celebrate Fela’s legacy on the international stage, including Grammy recognition. She highlighted the enduring relevance of Fela’s contributions, noting that ongoing criticisms decades after his death reflect his lasting impact.

Appealing for the preservation of the late musician’s legacy, Yeni stated that conflicts among the living should not tarnish Fela’s memory. She said, “I love Wizkid a lot. He’s my padi, my small friend. We’ve come a long way together. I remember when he started at the Shrine as a backup singer during Felabration. When two giants fight, it’s the grass that suffers. We are one people. We’re about to celebrate our icon at the Grammy, and you’re all doing this. You’re not dirtying Fela or his family; you’re dirtying Nigeria. Fela has been dead for 27 years, and you are still mentioning his name. That is the answer to his greatness. Fight yourselves, you that are alive, and leave the man that has done his own and gone.”
