The organisers of the 98th Academy Awards have unveiled the initial nominations for the 2026 Oscars, with actors Lewis Pullman and Danielle Brooks presenting the complete list across all 24 categories on Thursday. Early frontrunners include Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which earned 13 nominations, and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which set a new record with 16 nominations—the most ever received by a single film in Oscar history—surpassing the previous record of 14 nominations shared by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land.

The highly anticipated awards ceremony is set to take place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood, with Conan O’Brien returning as host. Leading contenders for major categories include Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Michael B. Jordan for Best Actor, and Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, and Emma Stone for Best Actress. In supporting categories, Benicio del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Delroy Lindo, Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Wunmi Mosaku have been recognized.

Directorial nominations feature Chloé Zhao, Josh Safdie, Paul Thomas Anderson, Joachim Trier, and Ryan Coogler, while screenplay nods include works by Robert Kaplow, Jafar Panahi, Ronald Bronstein, Josh Safdie, Will Tracy, Guillermo del Toro, and Chloé Zhao with Maggie O’Farrell. Sinners and One Battle After Another lead in technical categories, including cinematography, editing, and production design, with Avatar: Fire and Ash and F1: The Movie also receiving multiple technical recognitions.

The nominations reflect a wide range of international films and talent, including works from Norway, Spain, Brazil, and France. With records broken and new talent highlighted, the 98th Academy Awards promises a night of historic moments and global cinematic celebration.
