Responding to the remarks at the 2025 Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria awards ceremony in Abuja, Jonathan acknowledged that leadership inevitably comes with mistakes, stressing that no leader is infallible. He defended his time in office, stating that he did his utmost while serving as president.

Jonathan, who assumed office in 2010 at the age of 53 and left in 2015 at 58, questioned criticisms surrounding his age and experience at the time, noting that leadership should not be defined by age alone.
