2027 Presidency: Senator Nwebonyi Claims Political Set-Up Does Not Support An Igbo Candidate
According to Ireporter Online, the Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Onyekachi Nwebonyi, has expressed doubt over the chances of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, clinching victory in the 2027 presidential election, stating that the current political arrangement in the country does not favour an Igbo presidency.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the lawmaker maintained that the South-East has already made its political direction known ahead of the next general election. He argued that even if an Igbo candidate enters the presidential race, the prevailing political dynamics would not support such an ambition.
Nwebonyi further noted that many political actors and stakeholders in the South-East have already aligned themselves with what he described as the emerging national political reality, suggesting that positions have been largely settled ahead of the polls.
He also projected that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would secure significant victories in the South-East during the 2027 elections, insisting that growing support for the ruling party in the region is driven by clear political considerations.
According to him, “Peter Obi is coming at the wrong time. Even if our son comes to contest, it is very clear that the political permutation, as at present, does not favour an Igbo man. President Bola Tinubu and other APC candidates will win the south-east come the 2027 general election. The reasons are abundant; Igbo people have seen it, and we have taken our position.”
