248 Passengers Escape Death After Qatar Airways Emergency Landing In Lagos
According to Ireporter Online, a Qatar Airways flight carrying 248 passengers and 12 crew members was forced to make an emergency landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Friday night after experiencing a technical fault mid-air.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the aircraft triggered distress alerts while within Nigerian airspace, prompting an immediate activation of the state’s emergency response plan. In a statement signed by Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA highlighted that the swift coordination of its response teams helped prevent what could have become a major aviation disaster.
“Following distress alerts received at the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, LASEMA promptly activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans. Preliminary investigations revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was technical issues suffered by the distressed aircraft,” the statement said.
LASEMA commended the pilot for his professionalism, successfully executing a safe landing on the runway while emergency teams remained on high alert. All passengers were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The aircraft underwent a thorough check by the pilot and engineering crew before being moved to the apron for detailed inspection and necessary repairs.
The agency confirmed that despite the frightening incident, there was no significant damage to the aircraft. Recovery operations have concluded, and the aircraft has been secured. Eyewitnesses at the airport described tense moments as emergency responders lined the runway while passengers braced for the unexpected landing.
