500,000 Workers At Risk As Sachet Alcohol Ban Sparks Nationwide Protests
As the Nigerian government moves to enforce a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol packaged in sachets and PET bottles, the Food Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association (FBTSS) and the National Union of Food Beverages and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE) have sounded the alarm over the potential fallout: more than 500,000 workers facing the specter of unemployment….Read more JUST IN: NAFDAC Bans Sachet Alcohol Drinks, Others (Details)
Amid fears of economic upheaval, the FBTSS and NUFBTE staged a protest at the Lagos office of the National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), urging urgent government intervention to safeguard the livelihoods of half a million Nigerians.
Highlighting the grave economic consequences of the proposed ban, the associations warned of a ripple effect that could see industries shuttered, exacerbating an already challenging job market.
Vice Chairman of NUFBTE, Lagos Council, Emmanuel Idogien, lamented, “Most of our jobs are at stake. Many companies will fold up, especially those local industries that serve as raw materials to the producers.”
The unions emphasized their commitment to responsible practices, citing substantial tax contributions and ongoing efforts to educate the public about the risks of excessive alcohol consumption.
Calling for a reconsideration of the blanket ban, they proposed alternative measures focused on regulation and public awareness campaigns, cautioning that the prohibition could inadvertently fuel a rise in counterfeit products and associated health risks.
With the specter of widespread job losses looming large, the unions’ impassioned plea underscores the urgent need for a balanced approach to alcohol regulation—one that safeguards public health without sacrificing the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of workers.
