Activist Sentenced To 18 Months In Nigerian Jail Over Defamatory Claims Against Business Mogul

presiding, found Okonkwo guilty of posting defamatory remarks on a WhatsApp group, alleging Offor’s meter manufacturing business was an “empty warehouse.” However, the judge permitted an option for Okonkwo to pay a fine of N500,000 in lieu of serving time.

The defense argued unsuccessfully that the prosecution failed to conclusively link Okonkwo to the statement. Following the ruling, defense counsel S.I. Okonkwo expressed discontent but noted relief at the option of a fine.
