Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole’s Template: A Foundation For Okpebholo To Rebuild And Advance
Edo State, founded on August 27, 1991, with Benin City as its heart, is known for its rich cultural heritage and economic potential. Over the years, it has weathered various administrations, both military and civilian, each leaving its own mark on the state. Now, as Edo approaches a new era, the state is set to welcome its 11th governor and 6th executive governor: Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo.
Throughout his campaign, Okpebholo benefited from the backing of former Governor Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, a respected leader who championed the cause of development and progress in Edo State. Oshiomhole’s transformative impact was felt across Edo, as he oversaw projects that redefined the state’s landscape—from the “Red Roof Revolution” in education, where schools were renovated with modern infrastructure, to ambitious road and health projects that improved the lives of Edo citizens. His commitment to quality and accountability set a high standard that inspired pride and optimism among the people.
Unfortunately, this legacy of development suffered under Oshiomhole’s successor, Governor Godwin Obaseki. Despite inheriting a solid foundation, Obaseki’s administration failed to build on the progress established during Oshiomhole’s tenure. Roads that had once been smooth and safe began to fall into disrepair. Schools, which had stood as symbols of hope under the “Red Roof” initiative, deteriorated due to neglect. Vital public facilities, from healthcare centers to recreational spaces, were left to languish, diminishing the quality of life for Edo citizens and stalling the state’s growth.
The decline in Edo’s infrastructure and public services under Obaseki’s watch has left a palpable sense of disappointment among the people. They remember the days when Edo was on a steady path to prosperity, led by a government that prioritized their welfare. Now, they look to Okpebholo, not only to restore what was lost but also to advance the progress that had once set Edo apart.
Okpebholo’s mandate is a crucial one. He cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of his predecessor; the people of Edo expect him to rekindle the vision of a progressive state that Oshiomhole championed. This means delivering durable roads with effective drainage, revitalizing the “Red Roof” schools, ensuring healthcare facilities are functional, and fostering a vibrant economy that empowers every citizen.
Okpebholo’s task is clear: he must rise to the occasion and bring Edo back to an era of sustained growth and development. Oshiomhole laid the groundwork, showing that transformation is possible with dedication and vision. Now, it is Okpebholo’s time to elevate that legacy—to build a state that the people can believe in and depend on. Edo deserves no less, and Okpebholo must not fail. The future of Edo State rests on his ability to lead with the same commitment, excellence, and accountability that Oshiomhole exemplified.
