defamation charges initiated by the Police against rights activist Mr. Dele Farotimi, following a complaint from elder statesman Chief Afe Babalola.

Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, contends that certain sections of Farotimi’s 104-page book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice, are defamatory. As a result, he has submitted a petition to the Police.

While Babalola resides in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Farotimi is based in Lagos.

In a statement from its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, Afenifere emphasized that the legal system allows parties involved in disputes to present their cases. The organization believes it is crucial to protect the interests of both parties and the public while ensuring justice is served appropriately.

Afenifere highlighted that the court is best equipped to safeguard these interests and ensure that the prosecution upholds the principles of justice.

The organization called on all involved to refrain from making statements or actions that could disrupt the peace, urging the government to uphold the rule of law in its entirety.

Afenifere asserted that the courts are the rightful venue to determine any violations of rights, noting that the case is currently where it should be for all parties to present their arguments.

The organization encouraged all involved to adhere to and respect the rule of law and expressed hope that the judiciary would deliver justice impartially. Afenifere appealed to everyone, especially the parties directly impacted, to avoid any actions that may escalate tensions.
