Afenifere Urges President Tinubu To Prioritize Restructuring As Nigeria Seeks True Federalism
Proponents of restructuring in Nigeria, represented by the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization Afenifere, have called on President Bola Tinubu to take decisive steps toward dismantling the flawed political system and fostering true federalism in the country…..CONTINUE READING
Expressing disappointment in Tinubu’s apparent indifference to restructuring after over eight months in office, Afenifere emphasized the urgent need for federating units to have control over mineral resources in their respective regions, citing recent incidents like the Ibadan blast.
The communiqué from Afenifere’s meeting in Akure, Ondo State, urged Tinubu to address constitutional provisions that undermine federalism and contribute to the flawed security system. The call comes as tension mounts and security challenges persist across Nigeria.
Tinubu, once considered an advocate for restructuring, has faced criticism for his perceived indifference on the matter. Despite being seen as a democrat and federalist, his silence on restructuring since assuming office has been notable. Afenifere recalled Tinubu’s absence from the 2014 national conference on restructuring, raising concerns about his commitment to the Yoruba people’s interests.
Key figures, including Afe Babalola (SAN), Wole Soyinka, and media outlets like Punch, have consistently called for the restructuring of Nigeria to achieve political peace and economic progress. Soyinka, in particular, warned that Tinubu’s presidency might face challenges without a commitment to restructuring.
Afenifere and other advocates stress the importance of fiscal federalism, allowing states to control their resources and contribute a fair percentage to the federal purse. The current situation, where the Federal Government receives the majority of the country’s income, is deemed unreasonable.
Additionally, the need for local policing and the creation of state police has been emphasized to address rising security concerns.
The call for restructuring is seen as a potential solution to ease tension, encourage creativity and competitiveness among states, and foster economic stability through self-generated revenue. As pressure mounts on Tinubu to address these issues, the debate around restructuring remains a focal point in Nigeria’s political landscape.
