In a brief statement on his social media account, Okonkwo expressed his dissatisfaction, describing the decision as insensitive and ill-advised.

The actor argued that the Labour Party, traditionally seen as a party for ordinary workers, should reconsider its stance as the exorbitant nomination fee contradicts its intended purpose. Okonkwo cautioned the party against aligning itself with the practices of established parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), branding the decision as excessive and objectionable.

He stated, “Nomination fee by a party, which is meant to be a party for ordinary workers, and which the ordinary workers cannot afford is insensitive and ill-advised. The Labour Party should retrace its step now to avoid being classified in the same category with the old Nigeria political parties.”

This criticism comes in response to the LP’s announcement that aspirants seeking the party’s ticket in Edo State must pay N30 million for nomination and expression of interest forms. Despite the party’s claim that the fee is the most economical among the three major parties in the country, some aspirants have rejected the amount, demanding a reduction.

Dr. Egbe Omorodion, one of the aspirants, revealed that discussions are underway among the candidates to collectively take a stand on the matter.

As the controversy over the nomination fee persists, the LP has stood firm, urging aspirants who cannot afford the prescribed fee to withdraw from the race. The party emphasized that the fee is reasonable and cost-effective compared to those of other major political parties in Nigeria.
