According to Olayinka, political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections have influenced Amaechi’s position on the matter, accusing him of turning every national issue into an opportunity to seek public support.

The Wike aide made the remarks in a post shared on his official handle while reacting to Amaechi’s criticism of Tinubu following the controversy involving Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan.

Amaechi had accused the President of disrespecting the Catholic Church after Tinubu’s meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Responding, Olayinka described Amaechi’s comments as politically motivated, claiming that the former minister was using the issue to gain relevance ahead of the 2027 elections.

He wrote that politics had turned Amaechi into an “emergency defender” of the Catholic Church, while questioning his political history with Wike.

Olayinka recalled Amaechi’s past relationship with Wike, stating that the FCT Minister supported him during previous political battles before their relationship later changed.

“Wike helped him in 2007 and 2011. Wike defeated him in 2015, 2019 and 2023. Who’s he?” Olayinka stated.

The exchange followed a meeting between President Tinubu and members of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria led by Cardinal Onaiyekan at the Presidential Villa.

During the meeting, the Catholic leaders raised concerns about the state of the nation, while Onaiyekan later stated that the President disagreed with their assessment of the country’s situation.

The remarks sparked reactions from the presidency and other political figures, with the latest exchange between Amaechi and Wike’s camp adding to the growing political debate ahead of the 2027 elections.
