Airtel Halts Airtime & Data Credit In Nigeria — Users React
Airtel Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, a feature that previously allowed eligible prepaid customers to borrow and repay upon their next recharge. According to Ireporter Online, the decision is part of ongoing operational adjustments aimed at aligning with evolving regulatory requirements within Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
In a statement released on Friday, the company’s Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, explained that the move was necessary to ensure compliance with current industry standards and expectations. He noted that the suspension forms part of broader efforts to meet regulatory and operational guidelines governing telecom services across the country.
The company, however, reassured subscribers that the suspension would not affect its core services. Customers are expected to continue enjoying uninterrupted access to regular airtime and data purchases through existing platforms, with no anticipated impact on network performance or overall service delivery nationwide.
Also speaking on the development, the Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the action as a responsible step toward maintaining compliance and transparency. He emphasized the company’s commitment to consumer protection while continuing to innovate within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
Subscribers were further assured that updates regarding the status of the suspended credit service would be communicated in due course. The development comes amid heightened regulatory scrutiny surrounding digital lending and credit-based offerings in Nigeria’s telecom industry.
