APC Gathers Momentum in Abia State Amidst Wave of Political Defections
Striking development for Abia State politics, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has experienced a significant surge in support as members from various political parties make a notable shift to the ruling party. Reports from Vanguard indicate that over 500 individuals from the Labour Party (LP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Young People’s Party (YPP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have joined APC in the Bende Federal Constituency.
The mass defection was officially announced during a recent visit by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu. Kalu’s tour of the constituency, which began on Saturday, August 3, 2024, includes visits to 13 electoral wards. The purpose of his visit is to express gratitude and address the immediate needs of the constituents.
So far, Kalu has visited five wards—Item Ward A, B, C; Ugwueke/Ezeukwu; and Itumbauzo Wards—welcoming over 400 new members to the APC. On Monday evening, during his visit to Alayi Ward, more than 100 individuals from PDP, APGA, LP, and YPP officially defected to APC. Notable defectors include former PDP councillors Hon. Enoch Elekwa and Hon. Chukwu Udensi, former LP ward chairman Hon. Jonah Chukwu, YPP ward vice chairman Ekeoma Sylvester Eze, and former APGA local government chairman Ndubuisi Sunday Agu.
The momentum continued as over 100 more individuals publicly declared their switch from PDP and other parties to APC during Kalu’s visit to Umuhu Ezechi Ward on Tuesday. This wave of defections underscores the growing influence of APC in the region and highlights the shifting political landscape of Abia State.
The APC’s increasing strength in Abia State could significantly impact the local political dynamics and future elections.
