Inside Scoop: How APC Took Over My LG – Akpabio Breaks Silence!

The elections, particularly in Essien Udim Local Government Area—Akpabio’s home region—have sparked debate. While the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in 30 out of 31 local government areas in the state, Usoro Effiong, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, emerged victorious in Essien Udim. This result has been contested by local political figures, including Michael Afangideh, a prominent leader in the area, who argues that the PDP candidate was the rightful winner, casting doubt on the election’s integrity.

During the Senate session, Akpabio affirmed that Usoro Effiong legitimately won the election, noting that he secured the majority of the votes. However, he acknowledged that the elections were not perfect, saying, “The local government elections were not perfect, but my colleagues have praised the state government for being steadfast.”

Akpabio expressed appreciation for the fact that, despite being a federal figure, his local government declared the APC candidate the winner. He highlighted this as a sign of fairness and transparency in the system. “Some governments might have announced whatever they liked, given my position, but Governor Eno allowed the actual results to stand, which is why I commend him,” Akpabio stated.

He further emphasized that this result indicates hope for future improvements in the election process both in Akwa Ibom and the country. Akpabio commended Governor Eno for his “uncommon gesture” and mentioned that this event shows the need for a national dialogue to reform the electioneering system.

The Senate President also stressed the importance of repositioning the local government system, urging the National Assembly to take steps to ensure local governments are empowered as a third tier of governance. He praised the Supreme Court’s ruling that local government funds should go directly to local governments but urged the National Assembly to take further action to bring the ruling to life.
