An Islamist-led rebel alliance launched an attack on government forces, supported by Iran and Russia, on the same day a fragile ceasefire took hold in neighboring Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah. The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group and its allies now control most of Aleppo, except for areas held by Kurdish forces, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, arrived in Damascus and reaffirmed Tehran’s strong backing for Assad, with a focus on supporting Syrian government forces against foreign-backed terrorist groups. Following their meeting, Assad highlighted the importance of this support in the face of ongoing attacks.

Russian and Syrian airstrikes continued on Sunday, targeting rebel positions in Aleppo, Hama, and Idlib provinces, with at least 21 people reported dead, including civilians. The attacks aim to push back the advancing rebels, who have made significant gains in recent days.

The Syrian military, aided by Russian airpower, had previously retaken Aleppo in 2016 after heavy fighting, and Assad’s forces have relied on Hezbollah support to reclaim territory lost to rebels earlier in the conflict. However, Hezbollah has been heavily engaged in the ongoing war with Israel, impacting its ability to assist Assad.
