Led by Brig.-Gen. Eddie Effiong, Commander of the 6 Division Garrison, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, the troops uncovered the cache of crude oil concealed in eight large reservoirs within the dense forests of Odagwa community in Etche, Rivers.
Effiong disclosed that the discovery followed a tip-off regarding the resurgence of illegal refining operations in the area, with oil thieves regrouping after previous crackdowns. The seized crude, stored in massive reservoirs alongside coking pots, awaited refining into diesel, highlighting the scale of the illicit operation.
Expressing determination to curb illegal refining activities across Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers states, Effiong emphasized the economic repercussions of oil theft and its adverse impact on the nation’s economy.
“While the nation grapples with economic challenges, engaging in criminal activities like oil theft only exacerbates the situation,” Effiong remarked, urging perpetrators to seek lawful means of livelihood.
The army’s resolute stance against illegal bunkering underscores its commitment to upholding law and order, safeguarding national resources, and deterring criminal elements from exploiting the nation’s oil wealth for personal gain.
Effiong’s warning to oil thieves resonates as a call to action, signaling the army’s unwavering resolve to disrupt illegal activities and protect Nigeria’s economic interests from further exploitation.
