The decision to search the Dangote Group’s head office was attributed to the company’s reluctance in providing the requested documents. According to the EFCC, the visit was deemed necessary as its operatives were successful in obtaining the essential documents required for the investigation. The EFCC refrained from engaging in public disputes with the company, urging Nigerians to await the results of the ongoing investigation.

In response, the Dangote Group released a statement asserting that no accusations of wrongdoing had been directed at any company within its group. It characterized the EFCC’s visit as an attempt to cause unwarranted embarrassment and clarified that it had already submitted the first batch of documents to the EFCC. The company affirmed its commitment to cooperating with the EFCC by actively working on compiling and submitting the remaining documents as requested.

The EFCC’s inquiry into forex allocations during the tenure of Godwin Emefiele at the CBN is linked to the findings and recommendations of the Special Investigator, Jim Obazee, who accused Emefiele and his team of serious mismanagement, including allegations of manipulating foreign exchange rates, fraudulent use of Ways and Means amounting to N26.6tn, inappropriate intervention programs, and questionable expenditures on COVID-19. These findings prompted the EFCC to delve deeper into the foreign exchange dealings, leading to the search at the Dangote Group’s headquarters.
