The 28-year-old Nigerian international has reached an agreement to join the 2004 EFL Cup champions, with the team managed by Michael Carrick having the option to make the move permanent in the summer.

Reports from Sky Sports indicate that Middlesbrough will cover almost the entire €2 million that Iheanacho is owed by Sevilla for the remaining duration of the season.

Iheanacho has faced a challenging period in Spain since his transfer from Leicester City to Sevilla last summer, struggling to find the net in nine La Liga appearances. He managed to score three goals in the Copa del Rey but has yet to find form in the league.

The arrival of fellow Nigerian forward Akor Adams from Montpellier further reduced Iheanacho’s chances at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium. He has not played for Sevilla since the January transfer window opened, amidst transfer rumors and a slight injury, with the club indicating he is not part of their long-term plans.

The former Manchester City striker rejected offers from Greek clubs PAOK and Panathinaikos, as well as Italian side Venezia, opting instead for a return to England. A potential transfer to Scottland’s Celtic, which could have reunited him with former Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers, also fell through.

Iheanacho will be eager to regain his scoring form at Riverside Stadium as Middlesbrough, currently in seventh place, aims for promotion to the Premier League. The Championship club has accumulated 44 points from 29 matches, sitting just outside the playoff spots.
