The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru and ten other senior officers in a plane crash involving Nigerian Air Force aircraft near Kaduna.

Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Yerima, Director, Army Public Relations, made the announcement in a statement titled, ‘Chief of Army Staff, Attahiru, dies in an air crash.

Yerima added that the plane was en route to Kaduna from Abuja when the crash happened.

The statement reads: “The Nigerian Army regrets to announce the passing away of its Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru. The sad event occurred following an air crash in Kaduna which also claimed the lives of 10 other officers including the crew.

“The COAS was en route Kaduna from Abuja on Friday, 21 May 2021 when the unfortunate incident happened.

“Details of the sad incident and burial arrangements will be communicated soon”.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, appointed the late Attahiru as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff.

Attahiru replaced Major General Tukur Buratai, who served in the position for five years.
