One of the informants stated, “The burglary occurred at the quarters for Supreme Court justices in Maitama over the Christmas holidays. Dattijo was traveling abroad at the time.”
Dattijo, who retired from the Supreme Court on October 27, 2023, expressed his criticisms as he bid farewell to his colleagues. He described the apex court as corrupt and tainted by filth.
He bemoaned the prevalence of bribery and the perversion of justice within the apex court, highlighting the danger of excluding two out of the six geopolitical zones from the Supreme Court bench in hearing appeals on presidential elections.
Dattijo lamented the political, selfish, and sectional interests that, according to him, have influenced the appointments of judicial officers.
He asserted, “The process of appointing judicial positions is deliberately conducted to give undue advantage to the children, spouses, and mistresses of serving and retired judges and managers of judicial offices.”
He further pointed out issues at the Court of Appeal, where presiding justices are allegedly appointed out of turn, and recent court decisions have become unpredictable.
Dattijo emphasized the transformation in the appointment process, recalling that in the past, merit, knowledge of the law, integrity, honor, and hard work determined elevation to the bench.
He criticized the current state where lobbying and political interests seem to have compromised the integrity of judicial appointments, stressing the need for a judiciary that remains untainted by political and selfish motives.
