Council Boss, Security-Agencies Reach Agreement On Number Of Check-Points In Benue Community (Details)
The Special Adviser to the Benue State Governor on Security, Chief Joe Har, successfully mediated a peace meeting between the Chairman of Logo Local Government Area, Benjamin Uzenda, and security agencies operating in Ugba town regarding the number of check-points.
The meeting, initiated by Chairman Uzenda, aimed to address frequent complaints from motorists and commercial motorcycle riders about the high number of security check-points and incidents of extortion.
Motorcycle riders and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) had threatened protests if the check-points were not reduced to a minimum.
In an interview with The Nation after the meeting, Chairman Uzenda expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that reducing the check-points was also aimed at lowering the cost of food items in the market. He highlighted tensions that had arisen due to alleged extortion at multiple check-points along the area’s major road.
“I was concerned because the alleged extortions at the check-points created unnecessary tension; therefore, I invited the Security Adviser to the Governor to intervene, and I am pleased that the issue has been resolved,” Chairman Uzenda remarked.
Chief Joe Har, the Governor’s Security Adviser, confirmed the resolution, emphasizing the importance of supporting security personnel for the smooth operation of businesses in Ugba town.
“We have also agreed on operational procedures, which I cannot disclose to the media, but we have taken steps to boost the morale of security agencies in Ugba town,” Chief Har added.
This agreement marks a significant step towards ensuring better relations between security agencies and the local community, aiming to enhance security without disrupting daily activities in Ugba town, Logo Local Government Area.
