Court Reaffirms Julius Abure As Labour Party Chairman: Peter Obi Maintains Ties

Kehinde Edun, the Legal Adviser of the Labour Party (LP), has clarified that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, remains in touch with the faction led by Julius Abure despite the ongoing internal crisis…READ MORE…

Edun disclosed during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television program, that Peter Obi has never declared his intention to leave the party and continues to communicate with the Abure-led leadership.

This clarification follows a recent court ruling. The High Court and the Court of Appeal upheld Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party. A three-member panel of the appellate court, led by Justice Hamma Barka, reaffirmed its November 13, 2024 judgment, stating that Abure’s position remains valid and has not been overturned by any other court.

Naija News recalls that Peter Obi attended a September 2024 meeting organized by Abia State Governor Alex Otti. At that meeting, former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman was appointed to oversee the party until a new leadership is elected to succeed Abure.

When asked if Peter Obi has realigned with the Abure faction following the court judgment, Edun said:
“I believe so. He has not made any categorical statement about it, but he communicates with us regularly and has not indicated he’s leaving the party. To my knowledge and belief, he remains with us.”

Edun acknowledged the damage caused by the party’s leadership crisis but reassured members that efforts are underway to resolve the conflicts.
He said, “We recognize there’s a crisis within the party, but we are working diligently to reconcile and unite everyone. There’s still time to achieve this.”

Edun emphasized that the party has avoided legal disputes with its members, stating, “We’ve never initiated lawsuits against our members. Our legal challenges were directed at INEC, not Nenadi or others. The court resolved the disputes, and they chose to join. Our focus is on maintaining unity within the party.
