Speaking from Pau, where he serves as mayor, Bayrou emphasized that the U.S. under Trump’s leadership is pursuing a policy of unprecedented dominance, particularly regarding the dollar, industry, and investments.

“If we do nothing, the result will be clear: we will be dominated, crushed, and marginalized,” Bayrou said, urging France and Europe to act decisively. He stressed that Europe cannot navigate this challenge alone, underlining the importance of collective European action.

The French Prime Minister also pointed to China’s growing influence as a key factor shaping the global power dynamic.

Before Trump’s second-term inauguration, French President Emmanuel Macron had called for Europe to seek greater “strategic autonomy,” especially in defense, to reduce dependence on the U.S.
